Audio-Visual
Interaction and Collaborative Environment
We have been creating technologies for
audio-visual communication between humans, and between the human and the
computer. A system has been developed to resolve the lip-synchronization
problem in video conferencing. It has also been used in movie dubbing and
cartoon animation. Research activities also involve using the video camera
to track the face and lip movements of a user for lipreading, enhancing
speech recognition in a noisy environment, and as a means of human-computer
interfaces. Together with spatialized audio and lip-synchronized avatars,
these techniques are integrated to create an immersive collaborative
environment that will replace the existing videoconferencing platform.
Video
Coding and Multimedia Communication
We have contributed to international
standards such as ITU-T H.263, MPEG-4, and MPEG-7. Others lead to research
projects that go beyond the existing standards. Active research topics
include: standard-compliant encoder optimization, e.g., efficient motion
estimation and rate control, streaming and watermarking of audio, video, and
3D objects, network-adaptive coding and transmission, error resilience,
quality of service, and other networking issues, region/object-based video
coding, and indexing and retrieval of multimedia databases.
